Pet Washing Machines Not Just Fluff

A Tokyo supermarket has installed a automated machine that will clean and dry Fido in less than 33 minutes. It costs $30 to plunk your pet in the machine, which is a possible recession-friendly choice for those who can't afford fancy groomers.

Joyful Honda representatives claim their all-in-once device is safe – and for some people it can save a lot of time and headaches.

One groomer even hopped in the contraption to prove it was safe.

But what do the critters think? According to Anaova.com , Naka Honda said his Yorkshire terrier "hated" the dryer but tolerated it so long as Honda stood nearby. Eventually, the dog got used to the washing machine, he said.

Although Ananova 's report stated Joyful Honda's washer is for dogs and cats, an explanation page warns it should not be used on cats.

Doggy washing machines have been trotted out before. In France, Romain Jerry invented the Dog-o-Matic . The Dog-o-Matic adjusts the wash cycle to the size of the dog. The cost of cleaning your pooch ranges from $20 to $45.

Pet washers have also come with controversy. Jerry has countered that his Dog-o-Matic can be stopped at any time, if the pet becomes too stressed.

In the United States, the PetSpa machine has sparked allegations of cruelty from animal-rights groups.

The Florida-based company's Web site states that air and water temperatures are in line with recommendations from the Board of Veterinary Medicine.

The cost of a spin in the PetSpa can range from $12 and up, depending on the location of the machine. At Biscuits and Bath in New York City, clipping a dog's nails can set you back $20 – and that doesn't include a bath.
